Legal Metrology and its application has a profound and universal connection with the society because it ensures fairness, safety and transparency in daily life and commerce.

For ease of living and doing business we all are aware that the process of reforms undertaken by the Central Government have largely attained continuity. Reforms generally focus on correcting the problems within the existing systems. Modernization is the bigger overreaching trend of social evolution based on new ideas and technology.

E Maap portal is a significant step towards modernizing the Legal Metrology System by integrating all State Legal Metrology Departments in to a single national on line system.

Key features of E Maap include centralized access, real time tracking and digital, paperless, faceless processing of licences, registrations, approvals and verification certificates. The most important feature which the Hon’ble State Minister CA F&PD Shri B.L.Verma stated in the Parliament on 19th August 2025, in response to question number 2930, is data analytics and APIS for integration with other government systems, enabling real time compliance monitoring and data driven decision making.

No amount of data analytics, artificial intelligence or technological aids can help if the data accuracy is compromised. Accuracy of data is highly critical for informed decisions and trust worthy insights. Inaccuracies can lead to faulty analytics and decisions. With respect to legislations such in accuracies can result in ambiguities and creation of grey areas in draft of law which increases scope for judicial intervention. The very purpose of enacting a legislation is defeated, apart from increasing costs to fix it by way of subsequent amendments.

So far twenty States/ UTs have on boarded to E Maap Portal and remaining sixteen are in the process of doing so. If data driven decisions and legislations is a resolve, it is highly appreciated and more important is to disseminate information of such importance to all the States/UTS.
